Join with SETF and Friends of the Parks as we open you eyes to the vast open spaces of Chicago's southeast side. You'll expeience two of the city's lesser-known lakes, "Chicago's other river -the Calumet," streams, ponds, marshes: a man made waterfall, a world-class champion gold course built atop of a garbage dump; and the tranquil preserve surrounded on three sides by landfills where and American bald eagle pair have nested and are raising their young.
You will visit the nearly 600 acres of marshes and green spaces that the Chicago Park District recently acquired.
All our tours depart from the Chicago Cultural Center at Randolph and Michigan in downtown Chicago. Lunch is included at a local establishment. You can register and pay below or call 773-646-0436 for more information.
Every day lights are lit, homes are heated (or cooled) and cars are driven. What does it take to produce that energy? What do those systems look like? Join SETF when we visit a company that generates some of it's own power, see landfill gas turned into electricity, view rows of solar panels at an urban solar farm and drive through blocks and blocks of pipes carrying petroleum product.
Our bus tours depart from the Cultural Center downtown. This tour requires minimal walking. Lunch is included at local establishment. Register below or call 773-646-0436.
Down in the Dumps Ecotour
"Hold your nose: this tour stinks!" That's how a Chicago Tribune reporter jestingly decribed this eye-opening tour.
For years, the City of Chicago shipped all municapl waste to the Southeast Side, creating the unsightly mountains of trash along the Calumet river. We'll visit these and other waste facilities on Chicago's south side.
